Welcome to the 2023-2024 School Year!

September 18, 2023

Dear Asian American Studies Program Community,

I am thrilled to welcome you back to the start of the 2023-2024 school year! I hope that your summer was what you needed it to be (Restful? Full of sun? Productive?) and that you are ready to join us for what will be a fantastic year in our Program.

We are excited to welcome our NEWEST FACULTY MEMBER, Dr. Tara Fickle! Dr. Fickle, an expert on Asian Americans, race, and gaming, is joining us as an Associate Professor of Asian American Studies, housed fully within the Program! Dr. Fickle will be teaching “Introduction to Asian American Studies” in the Winter quarter and an exciting class on “Asian American Comics” in the Spring. Please see the full range of our teaching offerings for 2023-24 here: https://asianamerican.northwestern.edu/undergraduate/courses/quarterly-course-guide-2023-2024.html

In addition, I’m excited to welcome Dr. Ji-Yeon Yuh and Dr. Michelle Huang back from their research leaves. We have a full house on deck this year and a robust set of scheduled events. These include study hangs, lectures, and reading clubs open to all, as well as events specifically for our majors and minors curated by our fabulous Director of Undergraduate Studies, Dr. Shalini Shankar.

The One Book One Northwestern, chaired by our Professor Ji-Yeon Yuh, is Michelle Zauner’s CRYING IN H MART, and we will be hosting events featuring the book and Zauner/Japanese Breakfast. Woo hoo!

But first, please join us for our welcome back event, along with LLSP, advertised shortly.

Here’s to a fabulous start to the new year!

Warmly,

Nitasha Sharma, Director, Asian American Studies Program
