In 1995, students
at Northwestern began a hunger strike to demand Asian American Studies
at the University, sparking a crisis that led to the establishment
of a Program in Asian American Studies. For the tenth anniversary
of the hunger strike, the Program is proud to host a conference that
explores Asian American Studies at Northwestern and also examines
the development of the field over the same period. While Asian American
Studies began within a cross-racial Ethnic Studies movement, scholars
have turned to other ideas, particularly “diaspora,” to
reframe their considerations of race and ethnicity beyond the borders
of any one nation. The conference looks toward the future to discuss
where Asian American Studies is headed intellectually and what form
it will take here at Northwestern. |
